Ditch the Balance, Embrace Harmony: Your Path to Better Mental Health

At 10:00 p.m., I was finally shutting my computer after an 11-hour workday.

I was exhausted. My to-do list kept growing, I still had to prep for a rare Saturday work call, I needed to schedule a doctor’s visit, and I longed for time to work out. My head was spinning.

It was just too much.

When was I going to find time for myself?

I looked up and asked the magical goddess of work-life balance to grant me my wish.

And then it hit me: maybe work-life balance is the wrong goal.

Instead of balance, what if I focused on harmony? Could that be the key to easing my stress, reclaiming my personal time, and improving my health?

What Creative Professionals Really Want

I’ve interviewed hundreds of smart, successful, amazing creative professionals about their lives and careers. Here’s what they want:

  • To do work they enjoy.

  • To find balance.

  • A job with purpose.

  • A company that shares their values.

  • To avoid burnout.

  • Flexibility to care for their family.

  • Less stress.

  • Time & motivation to take care of their health.

Sound familiar?

When I asked one of the busy professional women how they find work-life balance, she seek harmony in my life.

Her perspective was life-changing. She explained, “Work-life balance feels like a scale—when one side goes up, the other goes down. That’s not what I want.”

And you know what, neither do I.

Why Harmony Beats Balance

The problem with “work-life balance” is the image it conjures: a woman teetering on a balance beam, trying not to fall off. Does that sound sustainable?

Instead, imagine a life where work and personal priorities flow together seamlessly, creating a sense of well-being and satisfaction. This is work-life harmony—a concept that’s increasingly embraced by today’s leaders as a healthier, more realistic way to live.

Here’s what harmony looks like:

  • Your work aligns with your passions and values.

  • You have the flexibility to attend to personal needs without guilt.

  • Your life has a natural rhythm that promotes health, calm, and joy.

Doesn’t that sound amazing?

How to Create Harmony in Your Life

Ready to harmonize your life and prioritize your health? Follow these steps:

1. Shift Your Mindset

Stop thinking of life as a balancing act. Instead, see it as an integrated whole where your work and personal life can coexist harmoniously.

2. Identify What’s Important

Make a list of your priorities—career goals, personal needs, and emotional well-being. Ask yourself:

  • Do I need daily exercise to feel good?

  • Do I need time at home to recharge?

  • What activities bring me joy?

3. Audit Your Time

Categorize your daily activities into two groups:

  • What’s important: Actions that support your goals and bring you joy.

  • What’s not: Time-wasters or tasks that don’t align with your priorities.

Shift your focus toward the important things while finding ways to minimize or delegate the rest.

4. Take Action

Choose one priority—your health, relationships, or a fulfilling project—and focus more energy on it. Small, consistent changes can lead to a more harmonious life.

Now, Imagine Your Life in Harmony

Picture this: You wake up energized to work on projects that excite you. You got a good night’s sleep again and you notice you aren’t cranky. You now have the time to make yourself lunch and get a haircut on Tuesday in the middle of the afternoon.

You feel a lot better than you used too. Changing your diet really is helping you think more clearly.

This is the power of prioritizing your health and harmonizing your life.
